In the last decade a sequence of major national celebrations, together with the last serious bid for constitutional reform, which was rejected at the end of 2016, have reawakened Italian historians’ interest in the topic of Regions and the territorial rescaling of State powers. The aim of this article is to highlight how in recent years a new spate of in-depth historical studies has begun to investigate the meaning of regionalization and the role of the Regions themselves, using an interdisciplinary approach and probing the links between State sovereignty, international constraints and socio-economicl transformations.
