In recent years, two scholars (Panayiotis Tzamalikos and Ronald H. Heine) have proposed a new dating for Origen’s Against Celsus and Commentary on Matthew. Since these works are two of the last by this author, their hypotheses also imply that Origen’s death occurred much later than is commonly believed. This paper discusses Tzamalikos’ and Heine’s arguments. A thorough examination shows that they are not strong enough to justify significant changes in Origen’s biography: the traditional dating of Against Celsus and Commentary on Matthew (248-249) remains the most likely.
