Charity, salvation and profit are related during the last centuries of theMiddle Ages in the texts of the scholastics and in the current practices of merchantsand public institutions, as is often attested by the archives of hospitalsand Mounts of Piety. Exchanges between the Pazzi family and the convent ofthe Friars Minor in Avignon in the 15th century suggest that the relationshipsbetween merchants and convents may have followed the same logic by relyingon legal categories which associate natural obligations and ius commune.
