Headlines are key elements of journalistic articles and textual units forming atext-type in their own right. Linguistic, semantic, socio-cultural and stylisticfactors have an influence on the translation. This paper aims at exploring thetranslation of journalistic headlines with a special focus on the translationstrategies and editing. The analysis is based upon a corpus of headlines fromthe Italian magazine Internazionale, both in their original French version andin their Italian translation. The first part of the study deals with the descriptionof the corpus alongside the stylemes typically used for the Internazionaleheadlines are also illustrated. In the second part some research into thetranslation of journalistic headlines is presented and the transformations ofthe Italian headlines undergo as well as the tendency to create new titles areexamined and discussed. Finally, the paper reflects on the term ‘translation’used in this specific area and whether it has any explanatory power for describingthe practices in the translation of journalistic headlines.
