Counterfeiting is a major problem in the art market, and itsharmful impact will likely grow as contemporary art (currently, themostaffected) is increasingly becoming an object of financial speculation. TheItalian criminal law has, however, not followedthe tumultuous evolution thatthe very concept of 'art' has known since the aftermath of World War II. Inthis ever-changingmarket a role of increasing importance is played by artists'archives. Born with the main purpose of protecting and preservingan artist'smemory and moral legacy, archives are now faced with growing involvement - bothas active helpers and as passivesubjects of scrutiny - in criminalinvestigations on fakes and forgeries.
