The article examines the influence of science policies on the Third Mission (Tm)of Universities. Comparing three international examples (Responsible Researchand Innovation, Broader Impacts and Social License to Operate), the article emphasisesthe trend to assess the relevance of scientific knowledge according to societalneeds and expectations. In the closing section, the implications for the University’sTm are discussed and the role of Public engagement in connecting Tmwith the research mission of universities is examined.
