Starting from the ancient commentaries on the veil of Timanthes, this paper draws a parallel between the effects of enkálypsis in the art of painting and the effects of émphasis («innuendo») in the art of speaking. The veiling of Agamemnon’s head in Timanthes’ Sacrifice of Iphigenia evokes Ajax’s silence in Odyssey 11.541-67 as an example of sublime greatness of mind (Auct. de subl. 9.2).
