The epitome of Festus' De verborum significatione gives us a form of participle "exfuti" instead of the more common "effusi". The aim of this paper is to discuss the correct form of this hapax and its connection with other forms of fundō. This form is a derivation from the important Indo-European root *ĝheu- "pour" without the -d that appears in the majority of the Latin derivatives ("fundō") and in the corresponding Germanic forms (Gothic "giutan"). We have no other attestation of this verb without -d, but we have some words that can be considered as derivatives from *ĝheu- without -d: "futis, fūtilis" etc. These are uncommon words of a low linguistic level. The analysis of ecfuti allows us to have important conclusions about the early history of Latin and its position among the Indo-European languages.
