It has repeatedly been stated that there are various striking similarities between Pliny’s Panegyric and Dio’s Kingship Orations. However, the difference in genre and the difficulty to establish a concrete background for the genesis of Dio’s four orations should bar hasty conclusions on mutual dependence. Even such seemingly apparent parallels as the cri­tique directed at flattery and the words commilito / s?st?at??t?? reveal as many differences as similarities.
