An Alpine region in Italy, Alto Adige / Sudtirol, where the population is mostly German speaking, has developed a special attention to architecture. The new South Tyrolean architecture combines contemporary design, technological innovation, use of traditional materials and craft skills, attention to landscape and livability, trying to mix sustainability and well-being, ‘urban living’ and ‘living with nature’. The policies of the Autonomous Province government, for historical reasons, have pushed for decades towards a separation among the school paths of the three cultural-linguistic groups: German, Italian and Ladin. Today school, as well as architecture, seems however to be one of the elements around which a new ‘identity’ of Alto Adige / Sudtirol is being built. The dialogue recently established between architecture and pedagogy, giving way to a laboratory where school is an important part of a new model of local development, together with its historical and social context, is the topic of this paper.
