In 2004 Nicola Grauso started one of the most disruptive publishing projects in Sardinia and in Italy since World War II. His editorial initiative was the first case of a «second generation free press», i.e. a newspaper having a dual distribution formula: free in public locals and available on newsstands at half the cost of traditional newspapers. The experiment, originally started in Cagliari with the name of «il Giornale di Sardegna», has subsequently spread throughout Italy, giving life, starting in 2005, to a chain of local newspapers united under the mark «E Polis». The article traces the history of «il Giornale di Sardegna» and its developments under the brand name «E Polis» until the bankruptcy of the publishing company in 2011.
