The paper explores the role of metaphors in the process of personal identity construction. First, we suggest how the concepts of "model scene" and "emergent metaphoric experience" can help developing a perspective on metaphors that highlights both their relational dimension and their transformative potential. If metaphors are co-constructed within an affective and empathic relationship with the other they constitute an opportunity of personal growth. Second, we will analyze the play «Six characters in search of an author» by Pirandello in order to show which are the consequences for personal identity of an impairment in the capacity to use metaphors. All the characters of the drama are in fact incapable of metaphoric communication and this prevent them from accessing a definite sense of Self.
