266The inclusion of the Agrarian Question within a ‘longue durée’ perspective can help make out its historical-structural nature and, in particular, the crucial role it played for capitalism, in the past for its emergence and preservation, in the present for its globally critical evolution; and also makes it possible to represent the capital development as a mechanism which generates permanently increasing ecological crises, in which the accumulation and expansion processes are supported by - and result in - symmetrical processes of erosion of the environmental and social assets. The concept of ‘ecological crisis’ is thus removed from its ‘epochal’ depiction, where it appears as a mere corollary of the final collapse of capitalism, and re-understood in its ‘developmental’ nature, as the basic rhythm that marks the waves of modern and contemporary civilization. The exhaustion of the essential natural resources, due to the reached physical limits of the global capital expansion, is giving back to the question of agriculture and land, now in the dramatic registry, the same centrality it held in the heroic period of capitalism; designating it as the future, crucial ground of a battle that seems decisive not only for the fate of the present economic and social system, but for the very survival of human life.
