The ‘return to earth’ is a phenomenon intrinsically multi-determined and with very dim contours, nowadays showing a remarkable ambivalence between two main meanings: an actually progressive one, leading to a reversal of the trend flows - in terms of demography and value - triggered by the long wave of urbanization/industrialization; and one, in fact conservative, which is likely to result in a mere extension of the expansive processes of the urban above and to the detriment of rural. Once defined its ‘virtuous’ meaning as a physical rapprochement to the open land in its dual dimension of biology and production (which refers to the fundamental territorialist interpretationof territory as a living person), the article tries to measure, in quantitative and qualitative terms, the real importance of this side, in order to understand - and, in the long run, encourage - its driving force.
