Both early supporters of Darwin’s theory and both exponents of positivist European science, Sigmund Freud and Paolo Mantegazza were also alike in their tendency to pair the more strictly scientific and experimental side of their research with further important inquiries of a philosophical and metapsychological nature. Particularly, I will show how these authors, despite their deeply divergent positions on homosexuality, sublimation (Sublimierung), so-called ‘sexual perversions’ and many other topics, elaborated – each according to his own theoretical stance – a truly transcendental theory of love, both in contrast to phobic and prudish contemporary attitudes about sex. Nonetheless, unlike Mantegazza, a scientist as well as a senator mainly interested in the practical goal of the sexual education of his fellow countrymen, Freud succeeded – thanks to the much more sophisticated and powerful instruments of his psychoanalysis and his stronger theoretical approach – in providing a radically new view of humanity and the world.
