A crucial aspect of the realization of the Zionist state-building project during the British Mandatory period (1922-1948) was the organization of a networked medical system. As the Mandate continued into the 1930s, it was increasingly difficult for an Arab medical system to compete with the Zionist one. To analyze the social reasons and the political implications of such a situation, I have divided this article into two sections: in part one I examine the dependency of the Palestinian population for their health and medical services upon traditional familial structures, on the one hand, and upon foreign agencies, on the other hand; in the second section I investigate some of the reasons why a Palestinian medical class did not emerge in this formative time. Among them, the little consideration given by the British authorities to medical degrees which Palestinians obtained in foreign institutions, the restriction of employment due to the immigration of a large number of Jewish physicians from Nazi Germany and, lastly, the difficulty of involving the local population, and women in particular, in auxiliary professions, such as nursing. The primary sources for this study come from various governmental and private archives in the UK, the US and Israel.
