In 1711 a severe of epizootic arrived in Italy. Introduced by cattle imported from the East the disease initially touched the territory of the Venetian Republic, but it soon spread to the rest of the Italian peninsula and then all over Europe. This article surveys the progress of the disease, from the initial alarm of the Venetian government to the reactions of medical personnel, to the proliferation of treatises. Fearing a new form of plague, with all the fear such a term evoked in the period, contemporaries strove to verify the cause and nature of the disease through research in the field, debates about terminology, the use of analogy, anatomical observation and the microscope. The medical debate focused on research into the disease’s defining characteristics in a period when theories about the nature of contagion, the existence of infinitely small agents and the specificity of diseases were beginning, despite the lack of proof, to encroach on the Galenical framework. In one of the first accounts of the introduction of the disease in Italy, that of abbot Borromeo, the contagionists identified the cliché of the “case zero” from which the epizootic supposedly developed. Relying on a range of different types of sources this article analyses the ways in which institutions and medical authorities compared and contrasted theories and observations within the rural context. Special attention is paid to the difficulties in putting emergency measures into effect.
