Light and shadow. On the relationship between photography and psychiatry. This article deals with the changing role of psychiatric photography. At first it was used as a tool for diagnosis and identification, but the author argues that it is also possibile to detect meaning and history in these photographs, especially in analysing narrative. Over the past three decades these photographic records have been viewed simply as reflecting the degrading treatment provided in asylums, the author argues however that through an in-depth investigation of these records it is possibile to use them to re-interpret our view of the psychiatric patient and of the mental health services.
