The aim of this paper is to highlight the evolution of public support at risk management policy in agricolture in Italy. In this context, particular attention has been paid on the insurance tool that historically, for various reasons, was the one most supported at the institutional level. The analysis showed that the policy to support risk management in agriculture, after the 2004 reform, has overcame some of the critical issues that often occur in other countries with a public systems similar to those adopted in Italy. The main weakness seems to be the uneven geographical distribution of insurance policies between the regions of northern and central-southern, where crop insurance are very limited widespread. In the concluding section, we identified areas of intervention to increase the efficiency of the entire system of public intervention in agricultural risk management.
