The objective of this work is to check the economic sustainability of some Tuscany forest-wood-energy chains. Furthermore, the aims of the study is to provide methodological support to the preliminary assessments to the structuring of these energy chains. The analysis focused on two types of chains of considerable interest: the chain of self-management and self-consumption, and the chain of self-management, self-consumption and heating sale. The study also examined the types of management and logistics solutions that these forest-energy chains have adopted to improve environmental and economic performance. The results have proved especially significant because it occurred on existing systems, on which measurements were carried out relatively to the costs of implementation and management. The results presented represent a part of overall results achieved during a France-Italy partnership project called BIOMASS.
