Besides his activity as a novelist, this article examines texts and contexts concerningthe relationship between architects, urban planners, sociologists and Calvino's theoriesabout the city. This idea of the city, that is the nucleus at the basis of Calvino's completetheoretical considerations, can therefore be inserted within an intellectual frameworkthat reflects the complexity of his cultural horizons.The starting point can be dated back to a text written in 1975, documenting Calvino'scontributions to the debate about the city during the seventies, in which the author ofthis article reconstructs the essential aspects. Finally, special attention is dedicated to thecorrespondence between the urban conception and the elaboration of the mythical andutopian quality of the city in Calvino.
