Emotion regulation is a central topic in clinical studies'. Considering the intrapersonaland interpersonal perspectives from which research on emotion regulationstarts, as well as the complex relationship between emotional regulation and motivationalsystems, this paper highlights theoretical and methodological aspects of the currentdebate on emotional regulation. The relevance of the relational approach to thestudy of emotion regulation is underlined in regard to the peculiar pertinence of thecontext, the flexibility of answer processes and to the coordination of the individual goalsin respect to the others' one.
