The residential complex belongingto the Conti (one of the main prominentaristocratic families betweencenturies XII and XIV in Rome),represents, with its Tower, the firstbaronial fortress in Rome, presumablydated between late XII and earlyXIII centuries. The article proposesan ideal reconstruction of the medievalasset, in the light of the lateststudies on baronial settlements andfamiliar complexes during the MiddleAge and starting from a backwardsreading of the sources supportingthe area's transformations. As in other contemporaneous settlements,Conti's residence was at firsta fortified and isolated building, surroundedby a crenellated fence, delimitating its boundaries with gardensbelonging to the same family. The complex used structures andmaterials of Forum Pacis. In conclusion, the article will show some observationsabout stratigraphy andreading of the Tower's buildingstructures, conducted by S. FerrariToniolo and F. Fiano, within someresearches for their post graduatedissertation (Scuola di Specializzazionein Beni Architettonici,"Sapienza" University of Rome).
