This review examines the main hypotheses on the development of numerical knowledge, that is the ability to comprehend phenomena using quantitative knowledge and the complex numerical system. This review analyses general terms of the debate regarding the relationship between numerical knowledge and other cognitive competencies, and specific hypotheses on numerical knowledge acquisition. The three main aspects considered are the development of numerical knowledge, the development of counting competencies, and the development of reading and writing numbers.
