This paper is about a collective research about “Shrinking cities and regions in Europe : preserve the territorial cohe- sion” (Villes et régions européennes en décroissance, maintenir la cohésion territoriale) with the initial support of the European Parliament and the successive support of a scientific publication. The aim at the research is the construction of an analytical framework of the demographical decline in Europe, in its territorial aspects. It is a prospective research which propose a regional typology – certain decline, probable decline, certain growth, probable growth. The governance matters are also a very important aspect of the research, because the demographical decline put at risk the inter-territorial solidarity. For these differents poinst of view, this research is a contribution to the notion of territorial cohesion.
