An increasing interest is put on developmental aspects of Borderline Personality Disorder, characterized by a pervasive pattern of instability in affect regulation, impulse control, interpersonal relationships and self image. This disorder is probably due to the association, in infancy, of specific diatheses and environmental stressors. An integrated approach that adopts either neuroimaging techniques and neurocognitive assessments, permits to describe the onset of the neuroevolutive process that leads to Borderline Personality Disorder and how this process becomes clinically manifest. Referring to what known about adolescent brain development and the consequent affect regulation, it's here attempted to outline the intermediate neurodevelopmental phases of Borderline Personality Disorder, that in adolescence or young adulthood has usually its clinical onset.
