The empirical evidence suggests a geographical segmentation of the Italian labor market. Labor market conditions affect wage dynamics only in the northern regions, and a structural rate of unemployment (SRU) emerges in this area. The paper provides an estimate of a time-varying SRU over the period 1960-95. SRU increases steadily in the seventies and in the first half of the eighties, and then declines.
