This contribution proposes a reflection on the central role played by the lawyer in today’s dynamics of trial and the protection of rights. While there has been a proliferation of conventions on the protection of human rights, today, on the other hand, we find ourselves witnessing a halt - sometimes a real retreat - in the protection offered in practice at both the national and international levels. In this context, the contribution examines the function of the lawyer before the European Court of Human Rights: he is the driving force behind a “circular” movement between the applications made to the European Court of Human Rights, the judgments pronounced by the Court and the impact that these judgments have in the domestic legal system
