David Armstrong and Michael McOsker have produced a new edition ofPhilodemus’ De Ira (PHerc. 182), accompanied by an English translation and alengthy introduction. The edition is warranted because of a number of advancesin the study of the Herculaneum papyri. This article summarizes the philosophicalresults of our work: it provides (§II) an outline of the surviving treatise, (§III) asummary of Philodemus’ views and (§IV) those of his opponents, and (§V) sets hisviews in the context of his school.
