This article is about the «place apart» that the Jewish minority occupies in societyat the end of the Middle Ages and which derives from the role it plays as an allyor an asset of power vis-à-vis its traditional competitors which are the princes andthe Church. This particular, rich and complex relationship cannot be defined ina binary or simplistic way, but combines protection, subjection and exploitation,all facets more or less highlighted of an evolutionary interdependence dependingon the context. The article focuses on the effects of this relationship on the urbanworld of the Crown of Aragon in the end of the Middle Ages.
