The sustainability of developmental policies and business initiatives is at the heart of current debate, but it is not a new issue in business history. This article identifies the origins of the controversial relationship between the developmental policies activated by the Italian institutions to promote industrial growth in the Southern regions and the newly approved laws for the protection of the environment in the years 1965-1966. The inconsistencies between the two policies emerged in the Seventies, opening a still unsolved contrast.
