Between the end of 1849 and the mid-1850’s an impressive anti-constitutional mobilization took place in the continental part of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies. In order to support the claim to abolish the Parliament and the constitution issued in 1848, more than two thousand petitions with hundreds of thousands of individual signatures were collected and addressed to the king. The essay examines some features of this mass manifestation of a legitimist pro-Bourbon and antiliberal feeling in the framework of contemporary Europe.
