Insofar as neoliberalism and globalization left it to market laws to regulate politics, historiography needs to bring its own tools up to date. Beginning some thirty years ago, global history is basically different from international as well world history. Its main concern is no longer with 19th century nation states or their mutual relations, nor with the historical imperialism. It rather deals with the apparent post-modern global dis-order, which is such as to make it difficult to attribute any ratio to the seemingly chaotic current times, unless one looks for those metaphysics that traditionally fed the history of civilizations. This occurs any time a crisis rises up and questions the cultural and social roots of a civilization. Cultural and subaltern studies work as indispensable complementary tools in order to study the social effects of neoliberal globalization, and are necessary to carry on new historiographical approaches free teleological assumptions.
