With the celebration of the centenary, several interpretations of the World War I appeared. The essay provides a picture of the studies in which updated research has been articulated. Historiography has highlighted the elements of continuity and fracture present in the Great War. Starting points could be considered the New World War historiography by Fussel and Leed and the Rovereto Conference launching it in 1985 in Italy. None of the aspects considered can be said concluded with the war, rather destined to expand in the postwar period up to the shadows of totalitarianism and the World War II.
