Focusing on the last thirty years' debate, this paper provides an insight into the political and historiographical interpretations of the strategy outlined by Enrico Berlinguer from 1972 to 1984. By analysing the memoirs and accounts of communist and post-communist leaders, the paper explores the political and historiographical debate giving special attention to the most representative books about Modern Italy (comprehensive studies of the period) and to the biographies of Enrico Berlinguer.
