Since the beginning of the 20th century the ecumenical movement has shaped several structures and organizational forms in order to enable dialogue between the Christian Churches and to strive towards visible Church unity. The article illustrates the phases of the process that led to the formation of the World Council of Churches in 1948 and, in the last section, the development of the ecumenical attitude of the Roman Catholic Church before and after the Second Vatican Council.
