Upon request of a large number of civil society organizations, the Human Rights Council started in 2010 the codification of the future UN Declaration on the Right to Peace. The article discusses the legal foundations of the human right to peace in international human rights law. Following the Santiago Declaration on the Human Right to Peace, adopted by the international civil society in 2010, and the Declaration on the Right to Peace, adopted in 2012 by the HR Council’s Advisory Committee, the essential elements of this emergent human right are spelled out.
