The author introduces the session devoted to tourist cultural itineraries in the rural areas, recalling briefly the basic philosophy and the main criteria that have inspired the investigations on these issues by the research group "The historical memory of rural land", at the Department of Historical and Geographyc Studies at the University of Florence. The first product was realized on the occasion of the Jubilee of 2000, the most recent ones have been dedicated to the cultural heritage of the rural world, giving preference in most cases to the electronic version and to the online dissemination.
