This article focuses on the relationship between law and the contemporary city from a theoretical perspective, with insights from the social sciences. Different ideas of space are taken into consideration, conceived as a physical dimension and a social product as well as modes of existence and approaches to the city in legal and political connections relevant for its influence and subjectivity. The city as a political, legal, symbolic-legal, justice and rights space is analysed, by highlighting ways of addressing the urban phenomenon and its potentialities for matters of methodology. In the concluding remarks, the paper discusses the perspectives, which can be used to understand the notion of city in legal studies.
