In this essay the author reconstructs the theoretical basis of Alessandro Baratta's project for a plural citizenship, which he set out in an article published in this journal in 1998. According to Baratta the promise of modernity consists in the construction of a State in which all men are regarded as citizens, irrespective of their home country, their ethnicity, sex, age and social status.
