This article analyses the crisis of the modern university and the rise of the global university, intimately related to labour and production's transformations, and the new role of knowledge. The image depicting the global university is not a flat one: on the contrary, there are common trends at a transnational level and different forms of translation. In this context, the article focuses on the Bologna Process and the changes of the Italian university system, highlighting its crisis and peculiarities. Its hypothesis is that the reforms and policies which occurred in Italy in the last twenty years can be globally seen as a strategy of disinvestment and withdrawal from the university.
