48The microfinance industry is now in its third decade of growth. It is a substantial component of development efforts in most developing countries and also now in developed countries where it is expanding
rapidly. During this growth period there has been ever-increasing attention to the modalities through which microfinance service provision seeks to contribute to the achievement of development objectives.
This paper presents the preliminary findings of a research project undertaken by the University of Bergamo, the University of Piemonte Orientale and the Giordano Dell’Amore Foundation, focused on analysing
microfinance projects in which also a business development component is
foreseen. The empirical findings of the surveys undertaken in selected
case studies in Colombia and Venezuela are presented focusing on the performance of the programs under two main different aspects: first the capacity to target the relevant population and second, the economic
impact of the program on the clients.
