This essay provides quantitative tools to evaluate the information processing capabilities of an organization, with a particular stress on information categorization. It employs a classifier system in order to model information classification and knowledge construction, and it develops indicators of information waste and information processing duplication. These tools enable a comparison of alternative organization structures from the point of view of information management. Two examples show the power of the model on basic issues in organization science: i) a comparison between hierarchies and "multihierarchies", alleged to capture the organization structures adopted by some Japanese firms, and ii) the law of decreasing production time with cumulative output, known as the "learning curve".
