Giulia Bernard, Nicola Ramazzotto, and Luca Guizzardi discuss the recent book by Paul A. Kottman "L’amore come libertà umana". Bernard’s contribution explores the central thesis of Paul Kottman’s book, according to which love can be considered one of the fundamental practices of meaning attribution. In particular, it discusses the different functions achieved by «explanation» outlined by the different authors discussed in the volume. The pursuit is to make the problem of explanation interact at a meta-level: that of the theoretical proposal that the book puts forward. In his contribution, Ramazzotto analyzes the «philosophy of meaning» implicit in Paul Kottman’s essay. After an introduction in which Ramazzotto sets out his objective, in the second part of the contribution, he studies what it means for Kottman to «attribute meaning», while in the third part he studies the notion of meaning in its connection with love and human freedom. Finally, in the fourth part, sense is analyzed with reference to its temporality and contingency. From a more sociological gaze, Guizzardi proposes to read the text through two lenses: Luhmannian theory and Queer. In fact, for Guizzardi, the imprint by which Kottman studies the making-sense of love (how we «make sense» out of love) and love relationships is, on the one hand, markedly Luhmannian (with Niklas Luhmman, Kottman shares the sense of meaning as the possibility of selecting other) and, on the other hand, deeply Queer because of love as a process of individual and collective self-education.
