345The article discusses the resurgence and new definition of urban aesthetics that has emerged in the last three decades in the international debate, along with this discipline’s claim to be the pivot point for studies and analysis of urban reality. In the first place it questions the basic notions that inform its object, and focuses on the urban forms of life. The contribution also analyzes some influential approaches to the question «what is a city?» and their influence on the definition of urban aesthetics. It then moves on to articulate the different layers that converge in the emergence of a new urban aesthetics. Namely, the observation of transformations in the urban arrangement of the world, a development in philosophical-aesthetic discourse and the field of urban studies, and some specific empirical researches. In conclusion, the text opens to possible developments in urban aesthetics in the direction of the social and political analysis of building and dwelling urban spaces, and aesthetic and social morphology, and closes by briefly introducing the papers that follow.
