Within the so-called «political turn» in analytic philosophy of language, the illocutionary silencing of women has been the subject of lively debate. This article will introduce some key theoretical notions from that debate, mostly derived from John L. Austin. Then, it will present some central issues, with particular attention to the thesis that power shapes language and to the relationship between individual and social responsibilities
