The foundation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on 30 December 1922 marked the birth of a peculiar new kind of state which combined a federal constitutional structure with strong centralization centring on the role of the communist party. Taking its cue from some research works that saw the light as part of the post-1991 historiographical renewal, this contribution draws the reader’s attention to the Bolsheviks’ attempted solutions to the national question in the multi-ethnic socialist state
