This paper attempts to provide a nuanced understanding of land developmentin Hong Kong. Instead of relying on dualistic categories of theGlobal North and the Global South to comprehend Hong Kong as part ofthe latter, this paper argues for the existence of the mutual embeddednessbetween two polar opposites, as informed by the tongbian philosophy. Accordingly,land development in the city is the outcome of the mutual embeddednessof the Chinese customary land practices and the Western landpractices in concrete time-space.
