'Ali Shari'ati has been an outstanding Iranian scholar nurtured both by traditional Shiite culture and modern Western philosophy and sociology. He proposed a peculiar Shiite philosophy of history aimed to liberation of oppressed and rescue of Islam. Pursuing this goal, Shari'ati criticized harshly Marxism to whom he opposed Red Shiite Islam as the basis of a true liberation theory. The article explores Shari'ati's philosophy of praxis in comparison with Antonio Gramsci's one.
