The article discusses the potentialities of qualitative research as enhanced by more or less recent opportunities concerning visual data, and argues for the strong relevance of a micro-sociological perspective in developing social theory. In particular, by taking as example the case of violence, the paper shows the fundamental role that non-verbal signals play in social interaction, and the consequent opportunities visual data offer to analyse the micro dynamics that underlie macro processes.
